Before the Station Camp softball team headed to White House on Tuesday afternoon in a key
district matchup against the Lady Devils, Head Coach Wayne Smith said he noticed something
different about his team.
“I could tell that their focus was different,” said Smith.
“They looked different in hitting drills and I hoped it would carry over to the game.”
Smith’s hope came to fruitition as the Lady Bison knocked off White House 7-3 and Station
Camp earned a much needed District 8-AA win that moved their record to 2-3 and 9-12.
“This win felt really good,” said Chelsea Parker, who had a big day at the plate with three hits.
“We needed a game like this for our confidence and I think we all came together really well
and got the win.”
Hannah Trice got the win on the mound for the Lady Bison, going the distance.
The game was scoreless until the third inning. That’s when the Lady Bison offense got
untracked.
The big hit in the inning came from Skyler Strickland. Her double scored Christina Manis and
Parker for the 2-0 lead.
Amber Schewe’s RBI single scored Lacy Walker who had reached with a double.
The Lady Bison made it 4-1 in the fifth inning, when Tara Merritt drove in a run with a single.
Station Camp added an insurance run in the sixth inning as Skyler Strickland’s double brought
in Manis from third.
Adding even more to their lead, the Lady Bison scored two more runs in the seventh.
Danie Sanders led the charge with a double that scored two runs and pushed the teams lead to
7-1, which proved more than enough for the Lady Devils to overcome.
White House scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but Trice closed the door on the
comeback attempt..
We are still a week out,
but I wanted to give you
a heads up about one of
my favorite events of the
entire school year.
Next Friday, April 25th,
Gallatin High School will
again serve as host for
the Sumner County
Special Olympics.
From what I have heard,
the event is bigger and
better than ever.
I have had the privilege
of covering the event for
the last few years and
Michelle Brewington and
everyone that helps put
on the event at Gallatin
High School is to be
commended.
Countless hours and an
endless supply of love
go into the event and
everyone that has a
hand in the event comes
out a better person
because of it.
The event will begin
early in the morning
usually around 9 a.m.
(call the school to
double check) and kicks
off like every Olympic
game, with the lighting
of the torch.
This is usually done by
one of the athletes and
is a very big honor.
During the day, they will
have events such as a
the softball throw, field
events and many more.
One of the best things
about the event is that
everyone has a great
time and a great
attitude, no matter what
place they finish.
I think there are a lot of
athletes in the world that
could take a lesson or
two from our fine
athletes here.
But don’t think for a
second that all of the
athletes are not hoping
to bring home that first
place ribbon.
So next Friday, try to
make it to Gallatin and
watch the Special
Olympics. The kids
define character and
heart and determination.
Does it get any better
than that?
